Full Description

In 2012 an entrance to a tunnel system was found during groundworks on a new ASDA site at Chatham Street, Ramsgate. Kent Underground Research Group explored and recorded the tunnels. They consisted of chalk-dug tunnels with two entrances, a loop and a long arm with an off-shoot from this. Benches had been cut into the walls and excavation was apparently by means of a mechanical pick. Lighting was provided by lamps and candles, some of which remained in niches in the walls. There was a great deal of graffiti in the form of pencil drawings and a carved date of 1938. This may relate to an inspection carried out in the run-up to the Second World War when the existing air raid shelters were inspected. This one does not appear to have been used in the Second World War. (1)
