Full Description
White Pit was a chalk quarry. It started working around 1855 (the earliest date recorded for the company responsible). It consisted of a large excavation and a number of associated structures, including the surviving kilns. The quarry was served by tram lines which delivered the chalk to the kilns and the lime from the kilns. The site was worked until 1909 when Formby's went out of business. After this date the kilns were disused but chalk continued to be extracted until 1931. (1)
