Mount's Wood dene-hole excavated Easter 1918 by members of Well Hall Historical Society and Dartford Antiq. Society. Shaft 14' diameter at top and tapering to a diameter of approx. 3' 6" in 13'. Average diameter of shaft 3' 4", passing through 44' of Thanet Sand and approx. 1' 6" of chalk. Caverns or chambers are four in number and are hewn out of solid chalk, height from floor to ceiling approx. 21' 6". Mark of tools on walls very fresh and distinct and all seem to suggest primitive implements such as horn picks or spikes. Only object found was a chalk spindle-whorl, now in Dartford Museum. Suggested date of dene-holes: - late Neolithic - immediate pre-Roman period. (1) TQ 59007317 Denehole, open. (2) The area in which this denehole was sited has now been quarried away.
