Full Description

In 2009 Archaeology South-East carried out an evaluation within Lullingstone Country Park in two stages. Flints, possibly of Upper Palaeolithic date, were recovered in the first stage. It is thought likely that these pieces were residual but had not been moved far from their original context of deposition. Finds included a long blade and a long blade core. (1)

Following these findings, an additional stage of work was undertaken. This found a significant quantity of worked flints of Later Upper Palaeolithic/Mesolithic date. The deposit likely represents a knapping scatter and a gap in the distribution may indicate the original sitting position of the flint worker. This is interpreted as evidence for a land surface of possible Mesolithic date surviving at the site. (2)
