Full Description
In 2002 the Trust for Thanet Archaeology carried out an evaluation. A total of 176 features were recorded on the site, all of which cut the natural chalk geology. The archaeological features consisted of 159 cut features interpreted as post holes and 17 interpreted as stake holes. Several groups were identified amongst these post and stake holes, representing several possible structural features, including possible fence lines and possible buildings. Group 1 was located at the northern end of the excavation area and comprised five postholes in a possible alignment. This posthole alignment may represent the ephemeral remains of a fence line or a structural feature such as a wall line for a timber built building. Group two again comprised five post holes at the northern end of the site, in a slightly curvilinear alignment and these may also represent a fence-line enclosing land to the south west. Group three was similar to group two and may form part of the same enclosure feature/ fence line. Group four was a double north-northeast to south-southwest aligned arrangement of 12 subcircular postholes which appear to represent a double fence line or boundary which may continue to the north beyond the limits of excavation. Group five comprised four post holes which look like they are the four corners of a rectangular post built structure. Group six comprised ten post holes arranged in an approximate circular pattern. Group seven was a curvilinear arrangement of eleven postholes, likely representing a fence line. Group eight was another curvilinear arrangement possibly representing a palisade fence line, it was located close to group seven and it is possible that together they represent the inner and outer post built walls of a round structure. The final group, group nine comprised six small post holes in a curvilinear arrangement, possibly representing a fence line or post built structure. The post holes which were not grouped may indicate multi phased occupation of the area. (location accurate to the nearest 1m based on available information) (1)
