Full Description
In 2009/10 Archaeology South-East carried out a programme of works on Kemsley Down and Kemsley Marsh. A ring ditch relating to a Middle Bronze Age barrow was found, a cremation was found in the centre of this. The central burial was radiocarbon dated to 1500-1380 cal BC. The ditch contained residual flints (see TQ 96 NW 122) and a large number of fresh broad hard-hammer flakes of Bronze Age date. A small amount of cremated human bone was found in the ditch, possibly representing a secondary burial, though it may equally have been disturbed by the construction of the barrow. Roman pottery was recovered from the upper fills of the ditch, suggesting the feature silted slowly over a long period of time. (1)
