In 2003 and 2004 Canterbury Archaeological Trust carried out a programme of works at Westwood Cross, Broadstairs. Two large quarries were dug during the medieval period. Only five sherds of early medieval pottery (late 11th or early 12th century) were found. It is unclear if this pottery is intrusive or residual. These features cut through the naturally formed brickearth like deposit making them later than the enclosure and any associated settlement which dated to the Bronze Age. It is likely the chalk was quarried to provide lime for fertiliser (marling), suggesting a medieval or later post-medieval date, though the lack of post medieval finds would suggest the former over the latter.
