Full Description

In 2004 the Trust for Thanet Archaeology carried out an evaluation on land to the rear of 103 Stone Road. The earliest deposit encountered was a soil containing pottery and fragments of animal bone, possibly representing a soil worked for agricultural purposes. The pottery was of Middle to Late Iron Age date. Two sherds of Belgic/Early Roman pottery were also found but may be intrusive. (1)

Later in 2004 the Trust for Thanet Archaeology subsequently carried out a small excavation and a watching brief on the site. The soil was found to relate to a lynchet. This was an artificial terrace creating two platforms that were later built upon in the Roman period. Pottery of Late Iron Age date was recovered suggesting the feature relates to intensive farming activity in the Late Iron Age. (2-3)
