Full Description

In 2004 the Trust for Thanet Archaeology carried out an evaluation on land to the rear of 103 Stone Road. The earliest deposit encountered was a soil containing pottery and fragments of animal bone, possibly representing a soil worked for agricultural purposes. The pottery was of Middle to Late Iron Age date. Two sherds of Belgic/Early Roman pottery were also found but may be intrusive. (1)

Later in 2004 the Trust for Thanet Archaeology subsequently carried out a small excavation and a watching brief on the site. The archaeological sequence uncovered during these excavations started with evidence of a lynchet or terrace dating probably to the later Iron Age. A shallow curving profiled cut into natural brickearth was sectioned at the western end of the site. Further sections excavated toward the east showed a shallow slope progressing east toward the main area of excavation. The cut appears to be the relic of an artificial terrace, creating two platforms on which subsequently the two buildings recorded on the site were constructed. The platforms may have originated as fields terraced by ploughing along the contours of the slope creating flat cultivated areas bounded by lynchets. (2-3)
