Full Description

Site identified during transcription of features recorded on air photographs. (1)

The enclosures are bisected by the unnamed track.

In 2010 Archaeological Surveys Ltd carried out a geophysical survey. The enclosures were clearly visible in the results but are located further to the south west than the RCHME transcription has them. The northern most part is c.90m further to the south whilst the southern part is out by c.30m. (2)

In 2010 the Trust for Thanet Archaeology carried out an evaluation. Features within the enclosure were investigated. Only a few sherds of pottery were found, most of which was medieval in date. It is thought that the enclosure may therefore be of medieval date, in use in the 14th century. (3)

Cropmarks of a cluster of four rectilinear enclosures thought to be a medieval settlement (see 3 above). The group appears as a large ditched rectilinear enclosure 112m N-S to the west of the trackway. On theeastern side of the track are three smaller rectilinear enclosures. The cropmarks of a number of later - probably post medieval- pits are visible scattered within the enclosures. The enclosure group is bisected by a modern NE-SW track, but the positioning of these enclosures and other sites to the north and south suggest there may have been a route contemporary with the settlements on its course. The western, larger enclosure lies within the field to the south of the Holiday park which was excavated and strippd for construction of a golf course suggesting the site may be partially destroyed.(4-5)
