Monument record TR 36 NW 162 - Enclosure cropmark, Acol Hill, 180m north west of Acol, Thanet

Summary

A rectilinear enclosurer cropmark feature has been identified in fields on Acol Hill. This site was recorded from aerial photographs taken by the Royal Commission on the Historic Monuments of England as part of a project to identify and classify cropmarks across Kent. The enclosure shows evidence of an internal feature.

Site identified during transcription of features recorded on air photographs. (1)

Visible in aerial photographs of 2007, and on Google Earth aerial photographs of 2013 . (2)

Cropmarks of a slightly trapezoidal rectilinear enclosure 38m x 42m with irregular sides, slightly curved corners,an internal sub-division and pits. This is possibly a settlement enclosure of later prehistoric or Roman date which was visible on aerial photographs: HEA 29751/20 29-JUN-2015, NMR 2137/16 28-JUN-1983 and EARTH.GOOGLE.COM 07/2013. ACCESSED 08-APR-2024. A short alignment of four pits can also be seen extending south-west from the western corner.(3-5)
