[TQ 5514 7478] "Roman 1st century cremation burials found in making foundations of new Roman Catholic School, 1955. Some pottery in Dartford Museum". (1) Approximately 15 vessels, some almost complete and others represented by single fragments, of 1st century Roman pottery found together with calcined bones on the site of the new Roman Catholic School, Dartford. The finds include a Samian form 18 (Drag.) and part of a Ritterling 8; also a vessel closely resembling Cheriton No. 14, which is dated by association to A.D. 80-90. The pottery in this group was roughly contemporary with that of the nearby primary school. [TQ 57 SE 18] [For an account of the 1st century urn-field at Cheriton, near Folkestone, see Arch. Cant. vol. 62, pp. 21-36. Cheriton form No. 14 illustrated on p.27.]. (2) Pot of bluish grey ware and "poppy head" beaker, both 1st c. A.D., donated to museum by Father Colebut in Oct. 1955. (3) None of these finds are held at the school and the headmistress thought that the contractors kept them [Messrs. William Blay, Dartford.] Mr. D.H. Phillips of the Temple Hill Primary School nearby possesses the lower half of a vessel and a few calcined bones and he was able to indicate the approximate site of the find. The area has been extensively developed and the school has been put onto the 25" from a 25" builder's plan. The N.G.R. (TQ 55187480) of the find differs slightly from that of Authy 1 but definite amendment must await the published 1-1250. (4)
