Summary

Romano-British and late Iron Age (Belgic) finds were discovered during the construction of a gas pipeline in 1984. A large patch about 7m across consisting of a layer of large closely-packed flints was uncovered. Also found on top of and between this layer were small pieces of iron slag, and a quantity of late Iron Age (Belgic) and Romano British pottery. (location accurate to the neartest 10m based on available information)

Full Description

[TR 32876548 sited from plan] Romano-British and Belgic finds were discovered during the construction of the Monkton gas pipeline in 1984. An irregular patch about 7m across consisting of a layer of large closely-packed flints was uncovered. From on and between these were obtained small pieces of iron slag, with sherds of Belgic and Romano British pottery. [This may be part of the industrial/settlement site TR 36 NW 182] (1)

Geophysical survey undertaken in 1992 (2).
