Full Description
[Area centred: TQ 5545 7451] Dartford Tunnel. Approach Road, in June, 1937, the Resident Engineer reported the discovery of a skeleton in the chalk cutting, about 100 yards north of the new railway bridge, Bow Arrow Lane. Dr. A. J. E. Cave, of the Museum, Royal College of Surgeons of England, reported: "The remains represent but one individual, a child of about seven years of age; this age is estimated from the teeth and the general ossification pattern. It is impossible to determine the sex. Whilst the archaeological dating of all human (and especially immature) material is extremely risky in the absence of collateral evidence, yet I think you can tentatively assign these bones to the pre-Christian period. They are probably of Saxon date, but one cannot be dogmatic on this point.". (1) TQ 5547 7457. Siting taken from photostat of O.S. 25" cut-out of area, accompanying photographs and MS. reports on discovery in possession of Dartford Library. No further information. (2)
