Full Description

Portions of Roman pottery, including Castor ware, the handle, rim and some pieces of a bronze vessel, bucket-shaped, and the rim and a few fragments of a leaden vessel were found 'recently' (c1902) in a chalk-cut grave by Colonel Copeland on land till lately the garden of a private house. The site is above West Cliff Terrace, St Lawrence, Southwood, near the waterworks. (1) These finds could not be traced in local museums or in the Copeland Collection in the Royal Museums, Canterbury. A chalk-cut grave was found on land above West Cliff Terrace, St. Lawrence, at Southwood, near the waterworks. (1) West Cliff Terrace is at TR 36768 64276, Southwood House was at TR 36909 65023 and the waterworks are at TR 37146 64888. The findspot indicated is then roughly mid way between all these points, though the ground is not shown on early OS mapping as a garden and was a cricket pitch by the time of the 3rd edition. The actual findspot could therefore have been further to the east, where there were gardens of the correct date.

The grave contained fragments of a wine jar (amphora?), parts of two grey ware vessels, portions of a small Castor ware vessel, parts of a copper alloy vessel and the rim and a few fragments of a lead vessel. The copper alloy bucket is described as being in pieces but is illustrated as complete. (4)
