Full Description

TR 3567 6473 Cropmark of ring ditches, partly cut by roads. (1) TR 357 647 (centred) Cropmarks of Bronze Age barrows. Site no 174. (2) TR 357 647 Cropmarks show several ring ditch barrows. Some are of small diameter and may be Jutish, especially those on the W facing slope below Chalk Hill. Just N of Little Cliffsend Farm there is a sub-circular enclosure, probably an Iron Age farmstead. Here there is also a ditch system for fields, probably Romano-British or medieval. (3) A 1:2500 scale air photographic survey was carried out in this area by the Aerial Survey section of RCHME between December 1996 and January 1997. Two small ring ditches lie at TR 3566 6475 and TR 3572 6478, both are incomplete, being cut by roads. The largest lies to the west, it is circular, 20m across and contains a single, central, circular pit. It is likely that this feature represents a plough- levelled round barrow. The eastern ring ditch is smaller than the first, being sub-circular and 13m across. According to the Thanet SMR (number 174), a Bronze Age spear head and a Jutish cane bead have been found in the vicinity of these features by metal detectorists. These finds may indicate that the larger barrow is Bronze Age in date whilst the smaller may be of Anglo Saxon origin.

The possible Iron Age settlement described by authority (3) is described more fully in record TR 36 SE 17.

The cropmark remains of the two penannular ring ditches described above area visible on aerial photographs at the locations given in (4) above - TR 3566 6475 and TR 3572 6478. Both abut tracks which appear to have truncated the ring ditches. They measure 20m across and 15m acros respectively. The truncated ditch terminals of the former enclosure appear to approximately coincide with two possible concret constructions thought to be part of the WW2 defenses in the area. (5-6)
