Monument record TR 36 SE 23 - Ring ditch and possible Anglo-Saxon barrow, Ramsgate

Summary

Cropmarks probably of a plough-levelled round barrow. A small number of Jutish artefacts suggest that it is of Anglo-Saxon date rather than Bronze Age.

Full Description

Cropmark of small ring ditch at TR 3603 6483. Possible barrow site at TR 3610 6476. (1,2)

A 1:2500 scale air photographic survey was carried out in this area by the Aerial Survey section of RCHME between December 1996 and January 1997, the following features were identified:

An incomplete oval enclosure lies at TR 3593 6489. The feature is 30m by 21m in size and surrounded by a ditch, up to 2m wide. Inside the enclosing ditch is the ploughed-out remains of an inner mound, visible on the photographs as a light coloured cropmark. Inside the enclosure, at its south-west end is a small ring ditch, 12m across, with a single central pit. This feature is probably the plough- levelled remains of an oval barrow, possibly of Bronze Age date.

A small, circular ring-ditch lies at TR 3608 6484. It is 10m across and probably a plough-levelled round barrow. It is quite small and therefore may not be Bronze Age in date, it might be of Anglo Saxon origin, Jutish artifacts being found in this area (see record TR 36 SE 20). This barrow is thought to be the same as that described by the previous authorities at TR 3603 6483. The possible barrow site described by authorities (1-2) lies at TR 3614 6475. (3)

The cropmarks described above have been surveyed as part of the Historic England: Ramsgate HAZ survey. This survey has identified the features in this record and mapped them from aerial photographs. The Oval enclosure at TR 3593 6489 appears to have traces of a mound within the encircling ditch, visible as a chalky spread. This may be the remains of a Neolithic or Bronze Age barrow. The second possible barrow at TR 3608 6484 can be seen as a single ring ditch with a diameter of 12m. The third site listed as being at TR 3614 6475 is likely to be the cropmark remains of a hollow or pit of uncertain date. These three have been described separately in individual NRHE records. (4)
