Full Description
An excavation was carried out as part of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link works at Pepper Hill following the discovery of the Roman cemetery. To the east of the road was a large circular feature 8m across and at least 4m deep (its full depth was not determined due to engineering restrictions relating to the railway). The road diverted around the feature suggesting that it could be of Late Iron Age origin. Pottery dated from the 1st and 2nd century, when the adjacent cemetery was in use, and a coin of Constantine (AD 322-325) indicates it was still attracting material in the early 4th century. (1)
