Full Description
In 2008 Swale and Thames Archaeological Survey Company carried out a programme of works at Neats Court, Queenborough. A roughly circular mound 15m by 12m across and still standing 0.5m high was excavated and found to contain 14 burials, both cremations and inhumations. There was apparently no central burial and some of the burials were late additions. The mound was built in two phases, with a regular core and a more irregular capping event, with a bank around it. The mound was built in cleared woodland upon a platform deposit. Initially it was possibly only c.2m across, being constructed from turves and clay blocks of regular thickness placed horizontally. At a later date, it was expanded. Most of the burials was then made into or on this mound. Again at a later date, the mound was further enlarged. It was almost completely buried in alluvium sometime around the Late Bronze Age or Early Iron Age. At this point, the bank was enlarged, perhaps to make the mound more prominent, and further burials were inserted into the alluvial deposits. Late Iron Age or early Roman quarry pits were dug in the area, through the alluvium, and after this period the mound appears to have been completely buried by further alluvial deposits and been left under marshland pasture.
