Monument record TQ 67 SW 527 - Iron Age pits and post hole, Downs Road

In 2006 Oxford Archaeology carried out work at the site. A large storage pit of Early Iron Age date contained a sequence of structured deposits. The first was most of a decorated jar placed against one side of the base. This was followed by successive layers of charred grain, ash and grain, a layer rich in animal bone and pottery including a fineware cup. An apparently sterile layer was then followed by a layer of fired clay and at least 13 complete triangular loomweights (as well as numerous fragments). Nearly 400 sherds of Early Iron Age pottery were recovered. This pit cut another with a very similar sequence of upper fills and finds. A post hole cutting this possibly acted as a marker for this pit group. A number of other pits of similar date were found elsewhere on the site. (1)
