Full Description

A concrete shelter, accessed via a flight of stairs down into a below ground room with an earth mound over it. The door was made of steel. There was an emergency exit shaft or observation port on the east side of the shelter. The shelter is undated with no documentary sources having been identified. An official observation post for monitoring fallout, dating from the 1950s, has been proposed as the most likely interpretation. (1) It could have been a private shelter of similar date.

Second World War [?] underground concrete shelter room behind the coach house of the formerly existing Mount Nod large residential dwelling on the north side of London Road, Greenhith, Kent. It consisted of a rectangular underground chamber, c. 5 m x 2.5 m, having a flat concrete ceiling, and having a staircased entrance and an escape hatchway at the end of the room served by a vertical fixed metal ladder. The whole of the structure was covered on the surface with a garden-type rockery. There was a circular metal mast over the top of the entrance with connecting wires. This suggests a purpose other than or supplementary to that of an air raid shelter which it resembles. No other information is presently known and so an explanation of the purpose of the room cannot at present be given but some sort of role within communications is suggested, unless the mast is later than the structure and perhaps unrelated to war. The structure was demolished to make way for the construction of housing in the summer of 2008. (2)
