Full Description

Archaeology South-East carried out an excavation in 2005. A possible lime burning pit was found. It was sub-square in plan, c. 3m x 3m with a hard burnt clay and charcoal rich deposit a the centre, overlying a pit filled with flint nodules and chalk fragments. Seventeen stakeholes were found in the base in a rough circle, perhaps relating to a kiln structure over the pit. Pottery from the feature dated to the mid 12th to the mid 13th centuries. (1)
