Full Description

In 2008 Pre-Construct Archaeology carried out a programme of works. Two linear arrangements of pits were found crossing the site, on alignment with Stone Castle. Pottery from these pits dated from the 16th to 18th centuries. It may therefore have been an avenue associated with Stone Castle. (1)

The alignment is not shown on the Ordnance Survey drawing of 1799 or the Tithe Map of c.1838. It does appear on the 1st edition mapping of the area and so is probably of mid 19th century origin. The alignment appears to have largely survived into the early 20th century but had gone by the 1940s.
