Full Description

Antiquarian sources record the discovery of a Roman villa and a temple in Luddenham, on Elverton Lane (see TQ 96 SE 24). It is not clear if one of those buildings was this site.

Fieldwalking at Luddenham Court in July 1996 recovered Roman pottery, tesserae and an unspecified amount of Roman ceramic building material that may indicate the presence of a building in the area. The reports also detail antiquarian accounts of the area, which refer to a possible Roman villa and a possible Temple structure. The later survey report (see 2005/197a p.90-91) also hints at further buildings identified during field walking to the north. The site is now under deep plough. (1-2)

Reused Roman building material is visible in Luddenham Church to the north. Fragments of box flue tiles were found during a small scale excavation in the churchyard in 2011 by the Faversham Society Archaeological Research Group. (3)

A rectilinear cropmark is visible in aerial photos of 2003. It consists of a rectangular area of lighter soil marks, possibly relating to walls. It is c. 25m by c. 20m. The area appears discoloured in other aerial photos, those from 1990 possibly reproducing the eastern most end of the feature.
