Full Description

An Anglo-Saxon axe was found c1832 in the corner of Ricborough Castle field near the cottage. 9th century 'T' pattern axe illustrated. (1) The Tithe Map of Ash (1840) shows the interior of Richborough Castle (TR 36 SW 15 - centred TR 324 601) as Castlefield. The only cottage shown is that still existing at TR 3252 6025. The find spot is therefore sited to TR 3250 6021. The present whereabouts of the axe was not ascertained. (2) Additional bibliography - not consulted. (3)
