Full Description
TR 302 648 Bronze Age Crouched Burial A crouched inhumation burial was found here. The highest point of the burial occurred at a depth of 0.9 m from the surface of the lawn in a sandy mixture of loam and brickearth. No marked variations of strata was observed but loam was turning into sand approximately 0.2 m above the level of the burial. Soil around the skeleton was moist with much red/brown staining on bones, which could be blood or more likely haematite. The skeleton was lying on, and was surrounded by, a number of flint nodules with some worked flints also present. The fill of thegrave contained fragments of burnt tabular flint and pot sherds, some under the pelvis. The pottery is flint-tempered and similar to Late BA/Early IA material, but could be local domestic beaker material. From midden remains seen in the fill of the grave, a nearby settlementis likely.
