Monument record TR 37 SE 4 - Roman burials

Summary

Several burials were found in graves cut out of the chalk in digging the foundations of the Charity School, Margate, in 1791. Associated finds included coins of Probus, Maximian, Helena and Pupienus and a sword and scabbard. A small urn with ashes was found the following year in excavations for a cellar in the next house.

Full Description

[TR 35417062] Roman remains found AD 1791 [NAT] (1) Several burials were found in graves cut out of the chalk in digging the foundations of the Charity School, Margate, in 1791. Associated finds included coins of Probus, Maximian, Helena and Pupienus and a sword and scabbard. A small urn with ashes was found the following year in excavations for a cellar in the next house. (2) The site of the Charity School is given on a plan by Wm. Edward, dated 1821 (scale appx. 1:500), in Margate Public Library, at TR 35427065. The present whereabouts of the finds was not determined. (3)

TR 356 703 Romano-British burials A Romano-British site was discovered in 1791 while work was in progress behind the Charity School. Several skeletons were found in graves hewn out of solid chalk. Pieces of a sword and scabbard and coins of Probus and Mamimian were also found. In May 1792 a small Romano-British type urn filled with ashes but no calcined bones or other remains was found in an adjacent area. (1)
