Full Description
[TQ 58247236] DENEHOLE [G.T.]. (1) Several shafts are situated on the edge of Darenth Wood about one third of a mile west of Bean, near a ditch [See TQ 57 SE 38] which runs westwards. At the west end of the wood, at the other end of the ditch, there are other 'caves'. Another 'cave' is situated by the side of a branch of the ditch running southwards, while the branch running northwards leads to a cluster of 'hut circles'. (2) A solitary denehole which Spurrell(2) has noted as a 'cave', was explored by Caiger at a point in Darenth Wood about 180ft. O.D. overlooking a valley. It is double trefoil in plan [see AO/60/152/5]. No finds are mentioned. (3) Within Darenth Wood, six deneholes were located: 'A' TQ 58247236. Open; shaft 1.5m. in diameter, depth not ascertained. (Authorities 1 & 3 refer) 'B' TQ 57647249. Open; shaft 1.5m. in diameter, 8.0m. deep. A collapsed chamber to the NE. 'C' TQ 57637252. A blocked shaft(a) appearing as a small depression, 1.5m. across. 'D' TQ 57667258, 'E' TQ 58237243, 'F' TQ 58197276. Collapsed deneholes. Circular depressions 9.0m. to 12.0m. in diameter, up to 1.5m. in depth. Surveyed at 1.2500; q.v. TQ 57 SE 38. (4) Two additional deneholes at TQ58337263 & 58377239. (5) The two additional deneholes are in the centre of a large field of ripening corn and are at present inaccesible. Their positions are marked by clumps of green vegetation and correspond with the sitings given by Caiger, who described the deneholes as collapsed or blocked, appearing as circular depressions some 7.0 or 8.om. across and 1.5 to 2.om. deep.
