Full Description

TR 372 712 Romano-British cremation A Romano-British cremation burial site was discovered here during construction of a new road in the Palm Bay Estate. Among the artefactsfound was a black cordoned cinerary urn which was found to contain thecremation, a Samian patera inverted and used as a lid for the urn which had the maker's name stamped on it; a small thin bowl which had been shattered by a workman's pick as had all the other items. A few yards away a red vase with a notably constricted neck was discovered. The urn tends to give a good indication of the date of all the other items as as belonging to the C1st AD. All the items were found within 15 inches of the surface. A bronze fibula of possible Hallstatt type (Villanovian?) in the Margate Museum Collection is said to have been found in association with one of the urns discovered here (may be a duplication of TR 37 SE 30).
