[TR 32727030] Roman remains found AD 1869-70 [NAT] (1) Roman coins, urns and a pavement were found while excavating in the ornamental grounds of St Mildred's Hotel (2). St Mildred's Hotel is now a block of flats. No further work appears to have been done in the gardens and there is no knowledge of subsequent finds. The present whereabouts of the 1869-70 finds could not be ascertained (3). TR 327704. Accordng to OS records, Roman remains including burials and a pavement were encountered here in 1870. A rescue excavation in 1987 indicated that the site had been destroyed on discovery apart from a horizon yielding Belgic and Romano-British remains which have survived at the northern end of the site (4).
