Monument record TR 37 SW 12 - Romano-British burials and finds, Margate

Summary

Human skeletal material and coins were reportedly found on the beach at Margate in 1925. During subsequent investigations graves were discovered on the cliff tops. The apparent hurried nature of some of the burials may indicate that these were battle victims. In 1986 the Thanet Archaeological Unit discovered several more unexcavated graves. Roman pottery sherds have also been found within beach deposits here: these may have eroded from the cemetery on the cliffs above.
