The sheepfold was built on the remains of a possible medieval saltern mound (TQ 77 NW 1351). As with many saltern mounds, the post medieval sheepfold was located on the south-eastern side of the enclosed raised area, utilising an elevated position in the marsh. The sheepfold is recorded on the 1st edition OS map of 1879. The mound was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project. (5-7)
