Farmstead record MKE83427 - Brick House

Summary

An outfarm with a loose courtyard plan with a building to one side of the yard. A post medieval sheepfold and an adjacent building on its southern side are depicted on the 1894 Ordnance Survey map in Cooling Marsh. This sheepfold was within a small field defined by drainage ditches. Nothing is depicted here on the Ordnance Survey 1805 map but this site may be the building linked to Willow Wick by a path that is marked on a later revision. By 1897 the site is marked "Brick House", although the buildings depicted have not changed from the 1894 edition. Although still visible on aerial photographs taken in 1961 the building appears to have been demolished or partly collapsed by 1978. All structures had gone by 2003 and the drainage ditches levelled. This site was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.
