Full Description

[TQ 563 702] Spearhead found during gravel workings at White House Farm, Darenth, Kent in June 1982. Because of the nature of the quarry operation, it was not possible to relate the spearhead to any dateable deposit. However, the find spot is close to the extensive Roman site at South Darenth and may possibly relate to it. The spearhead is made of iron, and is at least 22cm in length with an ovate blade 5cm wide. It has a closed socket which is damaged, but still contains part of its original wooden shaft. The weapon, probably a javelin or throwing spear is of uncertain date. The example may date from the first to the fourth century AD, or even the 16th century. It could be either military equipment, or a general hunting spear, the latter being more likely. (1)
