Full Description
Former site of an oasthouse to the west of Clare House. The building is first recorded in the OS drawings of 1797, suggesting it was probably built during the eighteenth century. It is recorded on the 1840 tithe map for East Malling and 1st edition OS map as a rectangular structure with two roundels along its southeastern side. By the time of the 2nd edition OS at the end of the nineteenth century, the oasthouse appears to have been expanded, with three additional roundels constructed – two along the building’s southwestern side and one on its northeastern side. The remains of the building are visible in the 1940s aerial photographs, suggesting it was abandoned in the first half of the twentieth century. It is not visible in aerial photographs of 1990 onwards.
