Area J was a portion of the Grain-Shorne pipeline on slopes of a broad ridge north-west of Cliffe Woods village excavated in 2008. It is thought that the subsoil evident across the site indicates little damage by ploughing.

In the early post medieval period a field system was laid out over the site. Four pits or post holes may represent a gateway. A waterhole or well was also dug at this time. Pottery from these features was mostly of 16th and 17th century date. (1-2)
