Full Description
In 2012 the Hastings Area Archaeological Research Group carried out an investigation of a field. Metal detecting on the field had recovered slag, some with adhering furnace lining. Subsequent probing of the ground located a hard buried feature. A trench 4m x 1m was opened over the feature. Medieval sherds were found in the ploughsoil. A furnace base was found at a depth of c.42cm below groundlevel. 1st to 3rd century pottery was found associated with this feature. A layer of slag was found extending from the feature down the slope of the hill. (1)
A magnetometry survey of the field detected the bloomery as a large anomaly. (2)
