Full Description
In 2003 Canterbury Archaeology Trust carried out an excavation. A small farmstead was established on the site in the medieval period. Three structures were found, evidenced by beam slots and post holes. One building was c. 21m x 14m. It contained a central pit lined with chalk blocks and a sunken room at the southern end, also lined with chalk blocks. Adjacent to this building was a second 10m x 7.5m, within it were two hearths and a chalk-lined well. The third structure was 6m x 4.5m and it contained no internal features. To the west of the structure there was an area of burning and a gravelled surface to the east. A number of refuse pits, ditches and clay quarries were associated with this phase of activity, all dated by pottery of c. AD 1275-1350. (1)
