Full Description

A programme of archaeological investigation including evaluation and open area excavation between 1999 and 2003 carried out by Canterbury Archaeological Trust and the Trust for Thanet Archaeology revealed multi period remains. Much of the evidence was either Late Neolithic/early Bronze Age or Iron Age in date, but some evidence for the use of the site in the Late Bronze Age comes in the form of pottery findspots in the upper fills of earlier features. Pottery of Late Bronze/Early Iron Age transition date is best represented by a number of reasonably sized context assemblages from the upper fills of the recut Barrow 2. Diagnostic elements for the period c.900-600 BC include jars with internally-bevelled rims, largediameter thin-walled sub-situlate cordoned coarseware storage jars (with several regionally typical characteristic manufacturing traits) and a number of fineware bowls. These include a regionally atypical thin walled, incised decorated, vessel that fairly closely parallels a fineware jar from North Shoesbury, Essex, together with sherds from at least one bowl deliberately coated with a red iron-rich slip. There is no apparent continuity of occupation between the Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age and the earliest, 6th century BC, Iron Age. (1-2)
