Full Description
The former site of St Martin's Black Mill, a smock mill. It was probably built in the 18th century (appearing on OS drawings of 1797 and 1799) and demolished in the late 19th or early 20th century (last shown on the 2nd edition OS map of the area). It possibly went out of use between 1840 and 1862-75 as it is shown on the Tithe Map (described as "Mill & Land") but labelled as "Old Windmill" on the first edition OS mapping.
In 2010 Canterbury Archaeological Trust carried out an evaluation. The brick foundations of the windmill were found. (1)
In 2011 Canterbury Archaeological Trust carried out an excavation of the site. St Martin's Black Milll had brick-built octagonal foundations. Pottery found in the backfill of the construction trench dated to the late 18th or early 19th century. A tar floor was laid within the structure. This was sealed beneath demolition deposits which contained pottery of the late 19th to early 20th century. During the 20th century the hollow of the mill base was used as a rubbish dump. Documentary evidence indicates that plans were drawn up for the dismantling of the mill in 1868. (2)
