Monument record TR 36 NE 608 - Broadstairs North Cliff Battery
Summary
Site of a coastal battery built in 1794 to cover Viking Bay. Little of it now remains. The battery continued in use until the end of the Napoleonic Wars, after which it became a base for the Coastguard Service. Fort House, (now Bleak House), reportedly occupied by the Battery Commander, has important literary connections with Charles Dickens, and is now a museum.
