Full Description
A parsonage is recorded as having stood west of the church in Newnham during the medieval period. It was described as "vacant because of ruin" in 1569. During the eighteenth century, and possibly during the seventeenth century, Calico House was used as the parsonage. A building is shown on this site in the OS drawings of 1789 and on the Tithe Map, at which time it is known as Parsonage Farm. It is not clear if this is the same building as the medieval structure or if it was a replacement. This building stood on the street front and was probably demolished in the mid 19th century. The current Parsonage Farm building replaced the structure by the time of the first edition OS map.
In 2006 Kent Archaeological Projects carried out a watching brief on extensions to the current Parsonage Farm building. To the west a chalk floor was found. This was interpreted as from an outbuilding but could have been part of the medieval parsonage or associated with the post medieval Parsonage Farm. (1)
