Full Description
In 2008 Archaeology South-East carried out a survey. A hedgerow was recorded: This field boundary can be traced back to the OS Surveyor’s Map of 1798. Its straightness suggests it may be of late 18th century date, as indicated on the Kent HLC, although the presence of a range of tree species may indicate a reworking of an older boundary. The hedge is situated on a bank, an earthwork which is visible most clearly under thick tree cover in the southern sections of the feature. This field boundary therefore forms an integral part of a pre-1845 field system and is protected under the Hedgerows Regulations
1997.
A substantial hedge measuring approximately 4 m wide by 3- 4m high, with some much taller trees. It consists of several oaks, hornbeam, blackthorn, hawthorn, dog rose, brambles, and occasional fruit trees. Field maple and ash are present in the northern stretch.
A section was cut across the hedge bank revealing its make up of flint gravels and sandy silty clay over Gault clay.
It was removed in 2008. (1)
