Full Description

In 2010 Kent Archaeological Projects carried out a programme of works on a pipeline route. A Bronze Age ring ditch was found on the route. The ditch was roughly circular and c. 8m in diameter. An urned cremation burial was found within the enclosed area and is thought to be contemporary with the barrow. A second burial was found cut into the base of the ring ditch. This was a much disturbed Middle Bronze Age cremation. The ring ditch was filled with a deposit that appears to have developed over a period when the site was being used for further cremation burials. There were frequent pieces of burnt human bone, worked flint and sherds of Middle Bronze Age pottery. Two further burials were found cut into this deposit, one of which contained sherds from at least eight different vessels and the other had sherds from at least 11 vessels. Outside of the ring ditch a stone built feature was found, consisting of a linear arrangement of stones, possibly the remains of a bank that surrounded the barrow. (1)
