Full Description
Memorial to Pilot Officer AW Clarke, 504 Squadron, killed in action when his Hurricane (P3770) crashed nearby on 11th September 1940.
Pilot Officer AW Clarke was initially reported as 'Missing' when his plane was shot down over the Kent coast on 11th September 1940. However, investigations at a crash site south of Rookelands, near Newchurch, proved that the aircraft was Hurricane P3770, and confirmed that the pilot's identity was AW Clarke. Next-of-kin decided that his remains should be left undisturbed and that this memorial should be erected nearby. It was dedicated on 11th September 1986.
