Full Description
In 2010 Canterbury Archaeological Trust carried out a watching brief. A sequence of clay floors, post holes and beam slots relating to buildings of medieval and early post medieval date were found to the rear of 41 High Street. These probably related to timber framed buildings either set well back from the road or long narrow buildings with their frontage on the High Street. A sherd of 12th century pottery was recovered and it was suggested that the later structures were of 13th and 14th century date. Their distance from the current street frontage was linked to the possible presence of a market place. After the final building was demolished the area was cultivated as a back garden. It was reduced and levelled in the later 19th century when a brick and flint cobbled yard was laid out. (1)
