Full Description

The former coach house of the Chequers Inn was surveyed in 2012 during conversion to residential use by the Canterbury Archaeological Trust. The building was originally a small timber-framed barn of late 16th century date. Dendrochronological analysis of the timbers indicated that the building was probably built in c. AD 1581. This is similar to the date when the adjacent Chequers Inn was extended. The original barn was of three bays open from the ground to the roof. The building's rear and south-west elevations were partly rebuilt in ragstone in perhaps the later 18th century. The building was extended, in brick, to the north east in the 18th or 19th century. The timber-framing was replaced with brick in the early 19th century. The upper floor was inserted towards the end of the 19th century. (1)
