Full Description

In 1997/8 Canterbury Archaeological Trust carried out an evaluation and a watching brief on groundworks. There was a subsequent strip, map and sample excavation in the first half of 1998. The work was subsequently taken over by the Hertfordshire Archaeological Trust from late 1998 until early 1999. The final phase of work on the site was conducted by the Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit in 1999.

A short gully contained an iron-riveted antler and bone comb along with pottery not of a common Kentish fabric. The comb consists of the connecting plates and handle made of antler. They are secured by five iron rivets. It is of a Northumbrian form and is the first such example found in southern England. It possibly dates to the late 10th or 11th century. This origin, dating and the unfamiliar pottery found in the same feature led to suggestions that there could be evidence here for Viking age activity on the site. No further information. (1-2)
