Full Description

The Odeon cinema at Deal opened on 25 July 1936 to designs by Andrew Mather. It was one of ten Odeons to be designed by Mather in 1936 and Deal was also the first example of a Mather cinema to be externally faced with large blocks of vitrolite. Vitrolite was much cheaper and quicker to fix than the usual Odeon cladding material of faience. The auditorium was of the stadium-style with concealed lighting around the edges of a flat ceiling. In 1967 the cinema was taken over by Classic and renamed Classic. The cinema was twinned in 1972 and remained in used until January 1985 when it closed for business. Following its closure it became a snooker hall however one cinema re-opened on 11 September 1986 by an independent, named Flicks seating 162. A second cinema opened on 27 November 1987 in the former bar area, seating 99 (1-4)
