Full Description
Opened in 1936 to the designs of Andrew Mather, the Ramsgate Odeon had an exterior clad in opaque glass. This was yellow-buff in colour above canopy level but much darker lower down. The entrance block and the attached parade of shops and flats were two storeys high with the taler auditorium set across the site behind. A slab wall extended at right angles from the auditorium to divide the cinema entrance from the shops and flats. This had the word CINEMA set into it on both sides, leaving the Odeon name to appear on the two faces of an attached vertical sign. In 1967 the cinema was taken over by Class ic and renamed The Classic. After this date is was divided into a cinema in the former circle and bingo in the stalls. A second cinema replaced bingo from June 1983. Both closed in 1985 and the cinema was demolished in 1988, except for the parade of shops and flats. The site is now occupied by an Iceland store and car park. (1-2)
