Full Description
The Odeon cinema at Herne Bay opened in 1936 and was designed by Andrew Mather. It had an exterior in brick and stone, situated on a corner site. The corner entrance block was built up so that the Odeon sign was raised above the adjoining wings. Above the canopy there was a decorative metallic grillework featuring the octagonal O of the Odeon trademark as a sun shining over clouds below. Inside, the auditorium had long interior-lit panels down each side just below ceiling level while the front side walls carried horizontal banding that linked up with the pattern of the main curtains. In 1967 the cinema was taken over by Classic and was renamed The Classic. The cinema eventually closed in October 1987 and was demolished the following year to make way for a block of flats (1-2)
